Birthday celebrations & Thank You Styles - How do You?

How to you like celebrating someone's birthday? With surprises, special gifts?
I was once told that I am thoughtful and I do try to live up to that when it comes to family and friends' birthdays. I try to think about an activity, thing (plant, object, color) place, or food that he/she likes and try to make a gift of it. You may decide the gift is a no brainier to pick up at a store or maybe it's a homemade thing, just things to consider. In the case of my hubby he loves football, flying his heli, mexican food & movies. So my son and I made a special card showing a lil pic of each of those things - tix to KISS arena football (yes very different than the NFL but my hubby likes KISS and Fball so I thought what the heck ), dinner at new local Mexican restaurant and an early show of a super hero flick. And of course there was some baking involved.
Make a wish my sweet!

My husband was talking about a special lemon cake almost like a lemon meringue type so I thought I would try my hand at these lemon meringue cupcakes

The recipe is very simple and I took one shortcut and picked up lemon curd from Trader Joes. I wound up making the batter ahead of time and stuck it in the fridge. Word to the wise.....do not do this it actually made the cupcakes a bit dense not the normal light and fluffy texture. basically once you put it in the fridge the baking powder stops doing its job. Now, I know better but I definitely won't be doing that again. Making the 7 min frosting was easy too. And blow torching it right after was fun while my son watched too. He is already asking for the next creation with the torcher.
 Thank you styles

Much like birthdays saying 'thank you" can be given in various ways.
Saying thanks is always good

Sometimes just a card is sweet and appreciated. Other times a creative gift is the perfect choice. Recently it was Teacher Appreciation week at my son's school. Here was an opportunity to say thanks to his teachers, who take such good care of him everyday. We decided to give them a few of their favorite things (lists from the room Mom) all wrapped up on a lil decorative tray. The items were a lil snack, drink, lip balm, and magazine, again from their list of favs. Each of the trays included a card made by my son and a lil sculpture he made at the Art Zone in Hermosa Bch.  This is a great place where for ~$15 a child can go and play with various art mediums - paint, clay, paper, get messy in a wet room and of course there is a play room too if they need a time out from the art work. And best of all Mom doesn't have to clean up the mess or make a trip to Michael's for supplies.

What will your next celebration style be for the next birthday or thank you on your list?
